What To Consider When Selecting Your Pool Fence

Are you searching for a fencing solution for your brand new swimming pool, one that offers maximum safety and security whilst complementing the surrounding landscape? You can actually increase the value of your home whilst creating an ambient swimming environment with the perfect pool fence selection. Pool fencing is essential for the safety of your children. On top of this, the increase in the number of backyard drowning’s has meant the right choice of fence has never been more important.

There are a number of factors that you need to consider when making your selection, including:

  • Pool Location
Ask yourself the following questions. What direction is your swimming pool facing? Is it naturally sheltered from the elements? Do you live in a coastal, mountainous or suburban area? The answers to these questions will help you to select the most appropriate fence for your needs, as it will tell you whether protection is required (which could suggest solid panels) or whether the views are more important (so glass could be better).
  • Safety Requirements
To ensure that your pool fence is fully compliant with Australian Standards, you need to ensure that it’s at least 1200mm high. If there is a gap underneath the panels, ensure that a child (even just their head) is unable to fit through it. Any climbable objects within 900mm of the area should be removed. Any windows that overlook the area should not be open-able to prevent unauthorised access.
  • Pool & Outdoor Area Size
The size of your swimming pool and the space immediately surrounding it can also help you to select the best fence. A smaller area, for example, may benefit from glass to give the illusion of more space. An infinity design also benefits from glass fencing, as it enables you to enjoy the beautiful landscape without obstruction. Any type of fence tends to work with a larger area, as space is not a concern.

Generally, there are four options when it comes to pool fences – glass, steel, aluminium and aviary wire. We’ve taken a closer look at each option below to help you determine which will best meet your needs:

  • Glass – The most contemporary choice, glass pool fencing can be either framed or frameless (some companies also offer a semi-framed option). If you want completely unobstructed views, we recommend frameless.
  • Steel – An incredibly durable material, steel is a popular choice when security is a concern. Colorbond products are also available, allowing you to choose a solid or tubular panel in a colour to match your roofing.
  • Aluminium – As aluminium is resistant to rust, it’s a great choice for swimming pools. Choose between solid panels and tubular designs depending on how much visibility you desire.
  • Aviary Wire – For a more natural look, timber frames can be fitted with aviary wire. The holes created by the wire are not wide enough to allow for a child to climb through or get a foothold.

Did you know that, from the 30th of November 2015, it became a requirement for all existing pool fences to comply with current laws? In the past, fences only had to comply with the legislation as it existed when they were built. Now, all fencing must comply with the current laws. This ensures maximum safety for homes all over the country, preventing children from inadvertently getting access to the area and falling into the water.
